    Windows 8.1 Goes To Sleep

At this point, I recommend doing a full shutdown, and doing the POST Boot Test, (*Option 1 in my previous answer.*) As I said, I'm not currently a Dell technician anymore, but I still love their systems. The POST Boot Test can take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes in most instances, and will test...

    Windows 8.1 Goes To Sleep

As a former Dell tech, I can ask a few questions that might be helpful. 1: Have you run the system POST diagnostics? (From system off, hold Fn and turn power on, then let go of all buttons) 2: When you are turning the power on, are you resuming from Hibernate? 3: Are there any unusual sounds...

Windows 8.1 Pro - Unable to Update

I found an interesting article in the Microsoft Support forums, here, and I'd be interested to see if this solves the problem, but the KB numbers linked into it are somewhat old. At the latest, it looks like one of the KB numbers is from July 2016, and one would hope that if the issue is...

Windows 8.1 Pro - Unable to Update

Slavic, I tried the update download that you linked to, but the system sat there running the program for approximately 11 hours continuously with no results. Question: With a new OS installation, (as I said I'd had a complete OS drive failure and installed on a new drive) I use a couple of...

    So my Dell laptop

Depending on how long ago the system was upgraded to W10, there should be an option in 10's System Settings that allows you to roll back to the previous OS. Regarding the reset / refresh process, if you click "Reset" you'll confirm that you want to take the actions on screen. (i.e. reset the...

Windows 8.1 Pro - Unable to Update

Looks like it was a virus on top of a bad harddrive. My entire system crashed, and I had to install to a new drive. My machine "Tantrum" earns its name yet again. OK, not solved. New drive, reinstalled 8.1 Pro, still having issues. Windows Update is still not working. (It's a new drive. WHAT...

    Buying laptop, any suggestions?

I've got my own angle. I'm a Dell Certified Technician, and love their systems for their ease of repair and replacement for components that have any issues. ASUS is a great system line, also. MSI is fantastic. And personally, I'm not a fan of HP, Toshiba, Acer or Lenovo. The short end of the...

Windows 8.1 Pro - Unable to Update

Followed your steps as above, attempted to start Windows Update in services, then attempted to run the commands in this command prompt capture. (Yes, I like white text on a blue background. Nicely visible, IMO.) A DLL failure is popping up red flags in my mind. I also downloaded and ran...

Windows 8.1 Pro - Unable to Update

Slavic, thanks for replying. wuauserv in Task Manager Services shows up as Stopped, and when I click Start on the service, it will not change activity states to "Running" or anything like that. Going into Services, I right-click Windows Update, click properties, set it to Automatic(delayed...

Windows 8.1 Pro - Unable to Update

As the title says, my OS is unable to update. I've tried a lot of things. I've tried Brink's article from Seven Forums to reset Windows Update, I've tried the MS Update Troubleshooter, I've tried an article I found about using GPEdit to change the Windows Update settings. I'm running out of...

Windows 8.1 won't automatically sleep - what about making my own timer?

The instructions I had posted above have to do with going into your system's firmware environment, a type of Basic Input/Output System, or BIOS, for short. These settings can be complicated if you're not familiar with them. If this doesn't seem like something you would know how to do, or feel...

Windows 8.1 won't automatically sleep - what about making my own timer?

OK. So, looking through what you've said, if you've checked the power options and your system still doesn't sleep, I'd say, double-check the following: First up, hit Windows + Q and search for "Power Options" Click on the icon that shows the battery and power connector. Go into "Change Plan...

I see that your system is a desktop. Does it have more than one HDD?

Windows 8.1 won't automatically sleep - what about making my own timer?

Check out the Power Options in the Control Panel, and look for Change Plan Settings. You should be able to set sleep options in there, based on power usage and power conservation.

Can't recover password of deceased family member

Alternatively, you should be able to refresh the OS (Windows 8.1) by restarting the system and using the F10 method to go into Recovery Boot Mode. This will allow you to clear the system and start over, using it like a brand new system with W8.1 on it. Unfortunately, this does mean that you...

Solved Request: Windows Defender always active?

I haven't had another problem with this since doing the GPEdit method. The original issue, and the problem behind it was that a malicious program had been installed that had deactivated my OEM license. Since then, I had disconnected the data cables from all but my main OS drive, reinstalled...

    Schedule Automatic Check For Updates?

I want to be able to set my system to check for updates automatically on a schedule, and if possible, install them automatically as well. (I've been told the latter is not possible, but if there's a way, I'm interested in at least knowing how.)
