Sound fails to play on Windows 8

Sound fails to play on my Windows 8 laptop.

Here are the things I've tried.
  • Restarting the Audio Service (it doesn't restart, it stays stuck on "stopping", and I have to restart my computer
  • Updating my audio drivers
  • sfc /scannow
When I go to test the audio, this is what I see.
