Ok, I got it. I found the routine here. After the flash program expands itself into a directory, there's a platform.ini file that has a BIOS_Version_Check section. Set flag=0, and then flash away.

Thanks, KYHI, that's a great idea. For some reason, though, both the executables in the bios download require windows. I tried them by booting to FreeDOS. That doesn't make sense, unless the CD burn of the BIOS is a WinPE, and I don't think it is; certainly not with graphics.

It seems that Toshiba is largely abandoning customer self-support for its laptops. I have a C875D-S7331 that is not registering any audio device. I suspect it was subject to a power surge, and would like to flash the bios. I've already tried driver updates. The Toshiba site shows version 6.10...

Are they initially being saved as .jpg's? It could be a browser setting. Try the download in a different browser. One setting I think everyone should turn off is "hide extensions of known file types" in folder options.

Ok, I got it. The Ctrl-Alt-Del evidently is defunct. Instead it's simply the Back arrow near the displayed user name.

I activated the built-in Administrator account in Win8, but the account is nowhere to be found on the log in screen. Is not Ctrl-Alt-Del supposed to bring it up? Thanks, Paul

I think the problem was SmartScreen was set to its max position.

Not sure what you mean, but there are programs that return much of the classic functionality to Win8/8.1. I use Classic Shell, which takes me directly to the desktop, restores the Start Menu, and more.
