Windows Update stuck at "Checking for Updates"

Thank you very much. This was the missing link that solved my problem. A++++ Amazing that MS can't deal with things like this.

Flashing BIOS on a Toshiba C875D

Ok, I got it. I found the routine here. After the flash program expands itself into a directory, there's a platform.ini file that has a BIOS_Version_Check section. Set flag=0, and then flash away.

Flashing BIOS on a Toshiba C875D

Thanks, KYHI, that's a great idea. For some reason, though, both the executables in the bios download require windows. I tried them by booting to FreeDOS. That doesn't make sense, unless the CD burn of the BIOS is a WinPE, and I don't think it is; certainly not with graphics.

Flashing BIOS on a Toshiba C875D

It seems that Toshiba is largely abandoning customer self-support for its laptops. I have a C875D-S7331 that is not registering any audio device. I suspect it was subject to a power surge, and would like to flash the bios. I've already tried driver updates. The Toshiba site shows version 6.10...

    Please Read: Activation troubleshooting

Thanks, Superfly. The first sounds like a manufacturing error? The second I can't attest to, as I just bought the machine (in as-is condition). The only thing I can add is that the machine was really wrecked, like I've seldom seen. One rear corner was entirely broken off, top and bottom, and the...

    Please Read: Activation troubleshooting

Hi guys. I have an HP 2000 laptop with native Win8 Core. On Factory Reset, it will not activate, saying the key is blocked. I called MS and they said it was an HP problem. I called HP and they want $200-300 to fix it. I installed Win8.1 fresh on a blank drive to make sure it isn't an image...

Solved Windows Modules Installer Worker - high CPU for hours

I'm running a fresh install of 8.1 x64, on a C-60 processor and 4GB RAM. The system was fully updated, then today I did it again with about 175MB of updates. Since then WMIW has been consistently using a lot of CPU - 40 to 60%. I understand it should run for a while. I understand there are two...

WinRE cannot auto-repair Win 8.1 startup

I bit the bullet and am going for a new fresh install. Hopefully that will tidy everything up. Will advise.

WinRE cannot auto-repair Win 8.1 startup

Hi folks, I have a Toshiba C855 laptop, which came with Win8. I restored an image of a fresh install of Win 8.1, from another Toshiba C855 with similar hardware, to its hard drive. Very often with Aomei backupper I have to run Windows repair on the install to get everything in order before it...

    Pictures are Blank

Are they initially being saved as .jpg's? It could be a browser setting. Try the download in a different browser. One setting I think everyone should turn off is "hide extensions of known file types" in folder options.

Solved Can't find active Administrator account on log on screen

Ok, I got it. The Ctrl-Alt-Del evidently is defunct. Instead it's simply the Back arrow near the displayed user name.

Solved Can't find active Administrator account on log on screen

I activated the built-in Administrator account in Win8, but the account is nowhere to be found on the log in screen. Is not Ctrl-Alt-Del supposed to bring it up? Thanks, Paul

Refresh Windows 8 - Set a Custom Recovery Image as Active

I think the problem was SmartScreen was set to its max position.

    Finding my folders and files

Not sure what you mean, but there are programs that return much of the classic functionality to Win8/8.1. I use Classic Shell, which takes me directly to the desktop, restores the Start Menu, and more.
